backstein ii

The bricks used in this work are rubble from Berlin. 532 bricks collected from cemeteries, demolitions and from the street; It is a physical account of the destruction, recycling and reconstruction of Berlin.

The assembly of these materials forms an erratic structure, an evocation and a physical provocation. A conflict arises between the notion of a work of art or a simple construction. The weight and size of this structure defy the resistance of this space; the reinforcements in the underground (the non-visible part of the exhibition) make the intervention an essentially structural and constructive event. 1400 kg gathered in a square meter touching the sky, the ground and the underground, imply an interaction and dialogue of forces, between the new body and the pre-existence.

This body has been endowed with certain senses/organs that allow it to communicate and prolong itself; motion sensors, light, microphones and speakers (drivers) that emit the vibration of the structure. Intensifying the presence of the object -or the virtual aspects of the physical that could be prolonged- and generating interaction with the viewer was a fundamental part of this work.
